St. James Episcopal Church

Music Ministry

The Music Ministry at St. James Episcopal Church is a vibrant and vital part of our worship life.  Opportunities for participation are available for all parishioners, from youngest to oldest, and vary throughout the year.  We hope you will check out the many musical opportunities we offer, and consider how you might participate.

Deb Carraway

The choir is the musical backbone of our 10:15 a.m. worship services throughout most of the year.  Our season typically runs from mid-August through the end of May, with rehearsals being held in the Chapel on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.  We make music together, enjoy lively fellowship, and pray together as we seek to be God’s faithful musical servants at St. James.  Choral selections are varied in style and difficulty, and all high school-adult singers are invited to join at any time.  We also welcome additional singers to join for our special seasonal programming at Christmas.

MOMMY AND ME (preschool music)

Children ages 6 months to pre-K are invited to participate in music games on Wednesdays from 4:15-4:45 p.m. with a parent/adult.  We use shakers, flags, bells, drums and rhythm sticks in our play to build a good musical base for our young ones.

JUBILATE (K-8th grade choir)

The Youth Choir known as “Jubilate” sings at the 10:15 a.m. Sunday worship service regularly (usually twice per month), to the obvious pleasure of our parishioners and performs two special programs during the year in addition to participating with the St. James Choir in the annual inspiring Advent and Christmas concert.  Rehearsals are at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.

St. James has a wealth of instrumental talent within the parish.  These musicians are encouraged to use their gifts in worship, both as soloists and in ensemble.  Both student and adult instrumentalists are welcome!

There are opportunities throughout the year for vocalists to present solos, or participate in ensembles, for worship.  This is especially helpful during the summer months when the choir is not in session.

For the first three Sundays in August we invite anyone who would like to be a part of the choir for worship to join in a brief Sunday morning rehearsal, and then sing an anthem for the service that day.  This has become a favorite musical experience for many of the St. James congregation who enjoy singing, but who cannot commit to sing in the choir regularly.  And some singers who join us for this “pick-up choir” have so much fun they decide to give the choir itself a try!
